The attorney for Ron Cyr has wrapped his case at the Nadia Gehl murder trial after a final witness on Thursday.
That witness was Hamilton lawyer Douglas Burns, who told the court Cyr signed a document relinquishing his rights as the beneficiary of two of his wife's insurance policies.
The two policies were worth about $500,000 and Burns said Cyr wanted any money that would have gone to him donated to the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society and City of Kitchener youth programs.
Cyr signed the document on March 29, the day before he took the stand at his wife's murder trial.
Cyr, Nashat Qahwash and Zdenek ‘Dennis' Zvolensky are each charged with first degree murder in the Feb. 2009 shooting death.
The Crown has alleged that the insurance money was a primary motive for Cyr to plan Gehl's murder and enlist the other defendants to carry out the killing.
He also says that while the donation may look like a massive gift, it's really nothing because Cyr had no claims to the money.
The murder trial, which started in mid-January and is now in its 18th week, was initially only expected to last about eight weeks.
However, testimony from each of the accused was thorough and time-consuming.
