The 2012 U.S. RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards have been announced, with CTV Kitchener being recognized four times.

The Radio Television Digital News Association honours outstanding achievements in electronic journalism. The awards have been given out since 1971

CTV Kitchener won in the international small market category for best newscast, best breaking news coverage, best news series and overall excellence.

Michael Melling, regional news director for CTV in Ontario, says "This is a great honour for CTV Kitchener."

The winning newscast was "CTV News Special Report: Listowel Firefighters Tragedy" that featured a live broadcast from the scene of the fire that killed two volunteer firefighters.

The award for breaking news coverage was also focused on the station's coverage of the fatal fire in Listowel that took the lives of Ray Walter, 30, and Ken Rea, 56.

The award for best news series was for a three-part CTV Investigates feature by Meghan Furman titled "Paying for Care."

The series looked at the impact that prescription drugs not covered by Ontario's health care system can have on patients.

Melling says "We've got a hard working and creative team that strives to serve our audience everyday. It's great to be recognized by our industry peers for our work."

CTV's stations in Windsor, London and Barrie were also honoured for hard news reporting, continuing coverage, best use of video and best video feature.
