Thick plumes of smoke were seen wafting high into the air near Fairway Rd and Weber St Monday afternoon.

Fire crews say the fire started in the garage of a home on Fergus Ave.

The senior couple that lives in the home were able to get out safely with their pets and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze quickly.

Flames engulfed the garage at the back of the house, setting the roof on fire.

“There’s a fair bit of damage in the garage but there’s still lots of investigate. There were some vehicles in the garage so we won’t know the extent of it until we’ve looked through everything,” says Terry Gitzel, Assistant Platoon Chief with the Kitchener Fire Department.
