A construction worker from Brantford was airlifted to hospital Thursday afternoon, after spending more than two hours pinned underneath a concrete beam.

The man had been working at a site on Progreston Road near the community of Carlisle, southeast of Puslinch.

Trapped under concrete

A surgical team was brought in but their help was ultimately not required in freeing the man, whose injuries were described as severe by a spokesperson for Ornge.

Police said the 64-year-old man was conscious and breathing when they first arrived at the scene.

Rescue crews tried to use airbags to lift the concrete but that wasn't enough. A crane operator had to be brought in to lift the concrete slab off of the man.

The man was flown by Ornge Air Ambulance to Hamilton General Hospital in serious but stable condition.
