Life is slowing getting back to normal for residents of a housing complex in Cambridge, after a power surge damaged appliances and electronic equipment.

27 stoves have been replaced, and all lighting, smoke detectors and hot water heaters are working. Damage to tenants' items is being inventoried and assessed, and a dollar value is being assigned to those items.

“Once that’s done, then payments can be directed to tenants. We’re still working that through with the insurance company,” explains Deb Schlichter, director of housing for the Region of Waterloo.

While the region will look after the stoves, the laundry machines belong to a private company. They are responsible for fixing those appliances.

There is no timeline for when residents can expect compensation.

“We understand that tenants are being impacted by this. We need to ask them to be patient,” says Schlichter.
