David Thomas left an angry phone message saying he got ‘punchy’ with Denise Bourdeau days before she disappeared, jurors heard Friday.

Jennifer Bourdeau spent the day on the stand at the trial of Thomas, who is accused of second-degree murder in the death of her sister Denise.

She testified that she hadn’t had a particular close relationship with Denise until shortly before her disappearance, when a third sister told her that Denise was being abused.

On Dec. 23, 2006, Jennifer Bourdeau said, she went to visit the apartment her sister shared with Thomas, her on-again, off-again boyfriend.

Although the subject of abuse was never brought up, Jennifer Bourdeau said her sister looked “shabby” and had a bruise on her cheek – and was defensive of Thomas.

“Denise said ‘He’s a good guy. He makes good money,’” she said.

About a week later, Jennifer Bourdeau testified, she received three phone messages from Thomas in the same day.

In one of them, she said, an “angry” Thomas said that Denise Bourdeau was having health issues and he had been “a little punchy” with her.

“I was sick to my stomach. I cried. I thought he beat the s*** out of her,” Bourdeau testified.

They spoke the next day, Bourdeau told jurors, with Thomas claiming he meant he had spoken to her forcefully.

The health issues, she recalled him saying, were a common cold.

On Dec. 31, Denise Bourdeau and Thomas attended the same New Year’s party at a Waterloo restaurant.

Jurors have been told that the two did not arrive together, but did leave together.

Bourdeau’s whereabouts after that party have never been accounted for.

Jennifer Bourdeau testified that she kept in contact with Thomas through January 2007, asking for contact information for her sister’s friends – information with Thomas pledged to provide, Bourdeau said, but never did.

Thomas has pleaded not guilty.

His trial continues Feb. 9.
