The 27-year-old man inside a car allegedly being driven by an impaired officer of the Brantford Police Service has died of his injuries.

Hamilton Police say Const. Ryan Grant, 33, faces upgraded charges in connection with the crash, which occurred Monday morning on Emerson Avenue in that city.

At the time, police said Grant was displaying signs of alcohol consumption and was subsequently arrested.

Crown attorney Tim Power confirms to CTV News that court heard Grant allegedly made a sharp turn in his vehicle; his passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, fell out of the vehicle and hit the pavement.

Originally charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, Grant is now charged with impaired driving causing death.

Grant, a Dundas resident, has been suspended from his job with pay as Brantford Police conduct their own internal investigation.
