A collision near Clifford ended with a freight truck rolled over in a field, and the driver of a car being taken to hospital with serious injuries.

South Bruce OPP say the collision occurred around 5:15 a.m. Friday on Highway 9, just northwest of Clifford.

Investigators believe the southbound car crossed into the northbound lane into the path of the truck, which swerved into the ditch in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid a collision.

The truck, which was carrying 20,000 litres of molasses, ended up rolling into a field along the highway. Its driver was not hurt.

The 24-year-old Toronto man driving the car was taken to hospital. Police described his injuries as serious, but not life-threatening.

The Ministry of the Environment has been notified, as approximately 800 litres of diesel fuel spilled from the truck.

Highway 9 was expected to remain closed between Sideroad 45 and Sideroad 50 for much of the day.
