Do you use all the vacation days your employer gives you?

For a lot of people, that’s a question with an obvious answer: Of course!

But for many Canadians, finishing up the year with unused vacation time seems to be par for the course.

According to a new survey from travel website Expedia, the average Canadian had 17.3 vacation days this year, but only planned to take 14 of those days.

According to Expedia, those figures mean there will be about 31 million unused vacation days at Canadian workplaces this year, amounting to billions of dollars in wages.

While Canadians might not be using all of their vacation days, the survey found that they also want their employers to give them more time off.

Sixty-two per cent of survey respondents said that they feel they deserve an increased amount of vacation time

Other findings from the survey, which involved responses from 1,006 employed Canadian adults, include:

  • 27 per cent of respondents say they go a year or more between vacation
  • 45 per cent say they share pictures of their vacations on social media to “validate their experience”
  • 21 per cent say they can’t afford to take all of the days off they’re given in a typical year
  • Ontario residents and B.C. residents take 13 days off per year, less than workers in other parts of the country (14 days in Atlantic Canada and the prairie provinces, 16 days in Quebec)
