The careless disposal of a cigarette lighter is being blamed for a house fire in Cambridge’s north end.

Flames broke out around 6 p.m. Thursday in the basement of the home, located on Maryann Price Lane near Jamieson Parkway and Townline Road.

The four people living in the home and three cats were able to get to safety, but a fourth cat died in the fire, Cambridge Fire Department officials told CTV News.

Smoke damage was said to be evident throughout the house, with fire officials estimating the damage value at $75,000.
