Twenty homes in Waterloo’s university district were demolished Friday.

Crews from Ramseyer Earthworks were on-site in the block bordered by Hemlock, Balsam, Larch and Hickory streets, as nearly everything in the sector was taken down.

Eight apartment buildings will be built in their place, containing a total of 327 units to be used primarily for student housing.

The only building left standing was an existing apartment facing Larch.
