A Brantford Police officer was fined $1,500 and handed a one-year driving ban Friday for his role in a crash that left his passenger dead.

Const. Ryan Grant had been charged with impaired driving causing death.

That charge was withdrawn, along with others, in exchange for a guilty plea to one count of impaired driving.

Last August, Grant was behind the wheel of a vehicle that crashed on Emerson Avenue in Brantford.

Court heard that Grant’s passenger, Joe Flaherty, was not wearing a seatbelt, and fell out of the vehicle when Grant made a sharp turn.

According to Brantford Police, Grant made a “heartfelt and moving apology” in court, and had the support of Flaherty’s family.

Grant had been suspended from active duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

He is expected to return to work next Monday, and still faces charges under the Police Services Act.
