Two Brantford homes were extensively damaged by fire on Saturday afternoon. Brantford fire department received numerous calls at around 1:30 p.m.

“There was two buildings involve, 111 and 113 Peel Street. It looked more concentrated at 111, and spread to 113,” said Platoon Chief Ed Glover.

No one was living at 113. A resident was home at 111 when the fire broke out.

“They smelled some plastic or something burning…  and they exited the building,” Glover said.

The resident was lucky to get out of the building.

“One of our concerns was that 111 did not have any working smoke alarms,” Glover explained.

Firefighters were on scene within 15 minutes. Police went door to door evacuating people from their homes in case the fire spread.

“The whole neighbourhood was worried and nervous just because it was a really windy day, and the wind blowing any direction; anybody could’ve been affected,” said Kristen McCabe, who was evacuated from her house.

Neighbours were allowed back in their homes once the fire was under control.

There is no damage estimate yet, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
