A Brantford company has been fined $80,000 in connection with the death of a worker in 2012.

In November of that year, a 24-year-old woman fell to her death at a Mohawk Street industrial complex.

After falling through a skylight, she fell more than six metres in total and was pronounced dead at the scene.

She had been part of a crew repairing the building’s roof.

Last week, a Brantford court found a numbered company also known as Innovative Industries guilty of contravening the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and issued the fine.

Specifically, the court found that the company “did not take reasonable precautions to protect the safety of the worker” as there were no guardrails or other barriers blocking workers from the skylight, and the woman was not using any fall prevention equipment or procedures.

The company had pleaded guilty.
