Still mourning the loss of a baby killed in a crash earlier this month, members of the newborn’s family learned Monday morning that someone had broken into their vehicle and stolen keepsakes of the child.

The crash occurred last week in Wingham.

The newborn boy was killed in the crash.

Two people were taken to hospital with serious injuries – including the baby’s mother, who remains in critical condition.

Sometime Sunday night or Monday morning, a vehicle belonging to the child’s father was broken into while parked outside a hotel in London.

A number of items were stolen from the vehicle, including duffel bags full of baby clothes and an oak box.

The box contained a number of keepsake items belonging to the baby, including a lock of his hair, mouldings of his feet, a yellow hat and a CD of baby pictures.

“It’s totally senseless. We can’t wrap our minds around it,” said Pauline Benninger, the boy’s grandmother.

“I don’t know why they would take all that.”

Police say the thieves may not realize the significance of the items.

“To them, it would be worthless – but to the family, it’s priceless,” said London Police Const. Ken Steeves.

The box is described as being approximately 16 inches by 12 inches, with a clear varnish and dovetail corners.

Anyone with information about the theft, or anyone who comes across the items, is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
