The final meeting for the school year of the Waterloo Region District School Board focused on filtering internet content Monday evening.

The issue was first raised about a year and a half ago, and some parents say they are unhappy with how long it is taking for the issue to be corrected.

Jacob Reaume, who is the father of five children said “I would like to see that the internet be adequately filtered so that little children are not being exposed to inappropriate content whether it be pornographic or racist or otherwise obscene material on the internet.”

Gary Tomic, also a parent of students in the region said “It is a solvable problem. It has been solved all over the world many different times. It is more a matter of the will of those on the school board… if they want to solve it.”

Several trustees agree and put forth a motion that the policy be amended, and a cost established, by the end of September.

After the motion, Jacob Reaume’s reaction was mixed. “I think the motion is an attempt of the trustees to do the best that they can, but the necessity of the motion is a reflection of the fact that their Chief Information Officer has not been able to get the job done.”
