A  17-month-old baby girl has died and her mother is now fighting for her life after a collision on highway 7/8 in Kitchener near the Fischer Hallman exit.

Charges are pending. Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford said charges have not been officially laid in the fatal collision that happened at 6:30 Saturday night.

Police said a vehicle occupied by the mother, her husband and the toddler broke down on the highway and was rear-ended by a cube van.

OPP Sergeant Dave Woodford says it’s not clear if the family was inside or outside the vehicle at the time of impact.

"We don't know why the vehicle became disabled in a live lane, that's something our investigators will continue to look at why."

The driver of the cube van, a U-Haul rental, was taken to the Kitchener Waterloo police detachment for a breathalyzer test and arrested for impaired driving.

The baby girl was airlifted to McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton, where she was pronounced dead.

The mother was taken to Hamilton General Hospital by ambulance. The father had minor injuries and was taken to Grand River Hospital.
