Hundreds of community members gathered at Brantford Assumption College Saturday for the 19th annual Thank-A-Vet lunch.

With Rememberence Day just a week away family members, widows and members of the community packed the school to show support to our veterans.

One of the organizers, Brant MPP Dave Levac said that the event is an excellent opportunity for people to honour and thank those who fought for Canada’s freedom.

“It’s more than just simply saying thank you it’s an acknowledgment and it’s an honouring and to share our love of what they did,” he said.

People read poems, lit candles and paused for a moment of silence to remember the fallen soldiers who didn’t make it home.

A number of veterans shared their philosophies about the nature of the Canadian men and women who serve.

“When it’s necessary for someone to step forward for Canada there’s never been a shortage of volunteers,” said Jens Enslev, a Peace Keeping and Nato veteran.

As a token of appreciation a set of coins were specially crafted for each veteran or their family members for their service to Canada.
