More than a dozen people in a Woodstock neighbourhood were forced to leave their homes early Sunday morning as police tried to negotiate with an armed man.

Police say an intoxicated 30-year-old man assaulted the occupants of a Normandy Drive home and was armed with a nail gun.

The man fled to the basement then cut the Natural Gas supply for the home. Officers managed to turn off the gas at the exterior meter.

The man then started a fire in the basement before surrendering to police.

He was taken into custody without incident.

The home sustained approximately $100,000 in damage.

The investigation continues.
