American Airlines will no longer operate out of the Region of Waterloo International Airport.

In a release, the Region of Waterloo says it’s joining a list of Canadian cities losing air service to the United States, as a result of the low Canadian dollar.

American Airlines launched twice daily non-stop jet service between the region and Chicago in June 2012.  Over 170,000 passengers have used the local air service.

The airline will suspend its Chicago service, effective October 2016.
