There are serious concerns over contamination in Canagagigue Creek in Woolwich Township, despite reassurances from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.

The high levels of the chemicals DDT and NDMA in the creek are a result of contaminated sediment from the old Uniroyal site, which became Chemtura in 2006.

Back in May the MOE sent a letter to residents stating that contamination levels were decreasing.

However members of Woolwich's Technical Advisory Group, who meet once a month to discuss the contamination, claim that isn’t the case.

Members of the group met Thursday evening to discuss the letter from the MOE.

Chairman and environmental engineer Richard Jackson claims the letter is misleading.

“The notice to residents was inappropriate and misleading. The MOE says there has been a substantial decrease. We see no evidence of that.”

Residents say the creek is overdue for clean-up.

Chemtura and the Ministry of Environment are set to meet with the township on December 8 to discuss the matter further.
