An 83-year-old man accused of killing his wife in their home has been found unfit to stand trial due to mental health concerns.

Alistair Wood was charged with first-degree murder last November, in connection with the death of 84-year-old Kathleen Wood.

The couple lived at the Village by the Arboretum, a sprawling, adults-only community in Guelph.

His case now rests in the hands of the Ontario Review Board, which deals with cases involving people found unfit to stand trial or deemed not criminally responsible for their actions.

The board has a 45-day period in which to hold a hearing and determine Wood’s future.

Wood is currently in jail.

A spokesperson for the Ontario Review Board told CTV News that a typical outcome for a person found unfit to stand trial is for them to be ordered to stay in hospital, if they are not granted bail.

The spokesperson was not familiar with Wood’s case specifically.

At the time of Kathleen Wood’s death, the president of the residents’ association at the Village by the Arboretum said that “everybody said (Alistair Wood) had the beginnings of dementia.”
