An 83-year-old Guelph man accused of killing his wife made a brief court appearance Wednesday morning.

Alistair Wood walked into the courtroom slowly, and seemed to have a difficult time hearing the judge.

After about 10 minutes, he was returned to custody, with his next court date set for Dec. 1.

He faces one charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death of his 84-year-old wife, Kathleen Wood.

Police say they were called to the couple’s home, inside the Village by the Arboretum off Stone Road East, late Tuesday morning in response to a sudden death.

“Officers attended the home, and they located the deceased elderly female inside,” Const. Mike Gatto told CTV News.

One neighbour, who did not want her name to be published, said she knew the two as a “pleasant couple” who frequently played cards at the gated community’s retirement centre.

“It’s just overwhelming to think this is happening so close to us,” she said.

Wood’s mental state appeared to have been deteriorating recently, the neighbour said.

Three members of Wood's family were in the gallery for Wednesday's court appearance.

They were seen wiping away tears during the proceedings, and declined to speak with the media.
