The results are in from this year's provincial literacy test, and they show the majority of Grade 10 students met provincial reading and writing standards.

The Education Quality and Accountability Office says 82 per cent of students who wrote the test for the first time in April passed -- a success rate that has remained steady since 2011.

But the agency says most of those students who failed the test had also failed their Grade 6 provincial literacy tests.

Bruce Rodrigues, CEO of the agency, says students who struggle with reading and writing when they're young need more attention and support to ensure they can meet literacy standards in later years.
