While roads long closed for construction are reopening in many parts of Waterloo Region, it’s a different story in northwest Cambridge.

Thursday marks the day Fountain Street is scheduled to close for replacement of the bridge that lets the road pass over the Grand River.

That work is expected to last for up to two years.

“We have to systematically dismantle it from the top and keep the bridge stable at all times,” says John Stephenson, who is managing the project for the Region of Waterloo.

While cyclists and pedestrians will still be able to use Fountain during the closure, drivers will not.

The region’s recommended detour is for vehicles to use Highway 401 and Shantz Hill Road to connect back up with Fountain.
