Friday marked the last day of production at a mattress manufacturing plant in Cambridge.

Natura World Inc. had been making mattresses on Jamieson Parkway since 1994.

The company also made pillows and bedding. All its products come from natural materials such as wool and latex.

Quebec-based Spring Air Sommex, the largest mattress manufacturer in Canada, bought the company last year after Natura World filed for bankruptcy protection. At the time, Spring Air Sommex said they planned to keep the Cambridge plant operational.

A spokesperson tells CTV the decision was made to consolidate manufacturing at its Toronto plant due to less demand than expected, and all employees were offered jobs in Toronto.

Cambridge Chamber of Commerce president Greg Durocher says the city’s economy is strong and the laid-off workers shouldn’t have trouble finding new jobs.

“All you have to do is look at the transport trucks pulling in and out of Cambridge on a daily basis,” he says.

“They’re all moving goods and products from manufacturers locally.”

Six of the company’s Cambridge-based employees will keep their job, handling customer service, payroll and accounts receivable responsibilities while working from home.
