For the second straight November, Waterloo Regional Police offered to take in any unwanted weapons in exchange for not laying charges relating to the possession or storage of those weapons.

A total of 109 firearms and replica firearms were collected this year.

That’s a sharp decrease from the nearly 350 taken in during the 2014 amnesty, but still enough for police to declare it a “successful” campaign.

Also turned over to police were thousands of rounds of ammunition, as well as a number of other prohibited weapons and military ordnance.

Police say they’re still happy to take unwanted weapons off their owners’ hands.

Anyone looking to dispose of weapons should contact police at 519-653-7700, and never bring them into a police station unannounced.
